Class:
This week, the class was as hard as the first class. At the end of last 1 hour, professor’s words were hovering around me.
First thing we learned was logical fallacies—faults in logic. It includes slippery slope, hasty generalization, post hoc ergo propter hoc, genetic fallacy, begging the claim, circular argument, either/or, ad hominem, ad populum, red herring, straw man, and moral equivalence.
Then we talked about an article. The article was about whether we should accept Syrian refugees. Through this article, we learned how to effectively and clearly write an introduction of persuasive paper.
We were assigned to write blog 21, 22, 23. Blog 20 was optional. We need describe familiar places and strange places. 21, as usual, is a reflection. Difference was that we need started the “Home” section with “In a previous post……” Practice showing & writing. 22 was found poem. I need write 2 found poems out of my own blogs or assignments. No new words can be added to the poems. The poems should have themes.
The last assignment in this semester is One semester Memoir. I should go back to my blogs and look at what happened to me in the latest few months. Based on the blogs, I need focus on one particular moment and develop a cohesive story with strong arguments.
At last, we learned non-fiction writing. Non-fiction writing can be explained as “True story is well told.” Instead of telling audience with simply plain words like information, context, background and so on, authors use actions and narrations to show what’s going on under a certain scene.
After this, I lost myself. My note was disconnected from here.
Home:
In a previous post Week 11 Reflection, I used the following telling language to explain a moment from my life: During the conversation, the most questions he asked were about how to purchase a air flight ticket. I realized he was homesick. So I comforted him that his reaction is completely normal.
Here, I will revise this telling language into a scene that shows readers this same moment from my life.
The sky was blue. The wind blew slowly. I was driving on route 95 toward New York City. The radio, 101.1 FM, was playing the “Man in the mirror.” I was excitedly following the music. Suddenly, he, my employee sat beside of me, murmured:
“These days I have been feeling anxious a lot.”
“That’s fine. You have such reaction because you don't know this country and don’t speak English.” I said.
“Oh…”
Next song on the radio was “All of me.”
He asked, “Does the place where we live have any flight to China?”
“No, I don’t think so. But the JFK has it.”
“Where is the JFK?”
“You will see it. It is on our way.”
“Which boarding tunnel should I use?”
“I don’t know. Why you ask this?”
“Nothing, Just curious.”
Another song, “Shake it off.”
“How do I buy flight ticket?”
“You can buy it by yourself online.”
“Oh…That’s hard. Is there another way to buy?”
“I can help you. Don’t worry. You are not thinking of going back to China, are you?”
“I don’t know. I feel uncomfortable here. I can’t learn to do nails very well. I am useless. Thanks to have you with me. Otherwise, I must get lost.”
I comforted, “As you said, my existence comforts you a little bit. But let me tell you this. When I came to this country, I was much more anxiety than you are. I was completely messy. Not only you and me, I saw a lot of people were worse than you and me. But most of them successfully settled down here. Your reaction can’t be normal any more. So don't doubt yourself. You will be just fine.”
The radio lost signal. The noisy sound came out.
“z z ….”
