Class:
This week we talked about “Rhetoric and Rhetorical situation.” Rhetoric means using language effectively in different purpose such as, persuade, inform, educate, or entertain. Rhetorical situation is the circumstances in which people communicate. It includes the writer/speaker, the purpose, the audience, the topic, and the context.
We also learned thesis statement is very important in an essay. It has to be summarized by one sentence. The best way to examine whether the thesis statement is constructed clearly and specifically is to put the same statement on a “white” paper and see if it is still understandable. It should be understandable without all the support materials, introduction, and conclusion.
Every support material should have its statement. And these sub statement should back up the thesis statement.
Then every paragraph should talk its own story. Never put some related content under two or more unrelated paragraphs. Every paragraph should be balanced out in length. Also between every two supporting materials, there should be transition sentence which must be put in the beginning of the latter paragraph.
Similar to GPS, we learned TPS. T is for topic, P for position, and S for support. Topic means what the writer is going to talk about.. Position means that what is the author’s opinion on the topic. For example, take a car as topic, an author can talk about its different part depend on from what angle the person is looking at the car. All the opinions could be diversified, but they are all about the same car. Support means that the materials which are used to defend the authors’ position. For example, one person looks at a car and say this car is not good. Then the person must give out the reasons of saying so, like ugly headlights or dysfunctional wipers.
For the conclusion part, it is inappropriate to just copy thesis statement. Essays can be end up with strong quotations.

It has been 2 weeks since I wrote the last reflection. There are a lot of things happened during these days and I barely can remember most of them. (I am asking myself “How old are you?”)
On 2 days ago, I signed up for the online class in Coursera. I enrolled in the course “Data Science” which is what I want to learn. All the teachers are from John Hopkins University. The class has started from Tuesday this week. I can’t wait that someday I use analytical skill to analyze data. Hopefully I will finish this course in 5 months and get a fancy certificate.
Few weeks ago, I bought some new products into my salon. It is called ANC. It is similar to Gel nails. It lasts more than 2 weeks. It doesn’t need any UV or LED lamp to “bake”. The problem is that neither I nor any of my employee know how to do it. So I invited my friend from Albany New York all the way down to Media and had him teach us how to do it. He stayed with us for 1 week. We worked hard to learn it and recorded video of how he does it. Although the process was tough, we learned it very well and are ready to promote the new product to customers.
Never stop learning. No matter what it is, learn it constantly. Some day you will be surprised by your own accomplishment.
